What is pre-prosthetic surgery?
Sometimes patients choose to receive a partial or complete denture as a replacement for their missing tooth or teeth. With any removable prosthesis, the doctor must first ensure that the mouth can support the prosthesis comfortably. This allows the patient to avoid any discomfort or problem that may arise from an improper fit. For some patients, the doctor may discover that the shape of the mouth or the ridge may not be ideal for receiving the prosthesis. In these cases, a pre-prosthetic surgical procedure is necessary to ensure proper fit and maximum comfort of your dental restoration.
Many patients don’t understand why their mouth doesn’t support the prosthesis as is. Our genetics gives us varying physical attributes, and sometimes the development of our jaw bone is not perfectly shaped to accommodate tooth replacements comfortably or in a stable manner. This irregularity can make everyday activities like chewing extremely difficult and even painful when wearing a prosthesis. Because the denture rests on the bone ridge, we have to ensure that the mouth maintains the proper shape and size for the dentures to fit properly. Through pre-prosthetic surgery, Dr. Barber or Springer can shape your mouth to improve the fit and comfort of your prosthesis.
Various procedures might be performed to prepare your mouth for a denture, and the treatment you receive will be dependent on your mouth’s individual needs. Common pre-prosthetic procedures include
- Smoothing or reshaping of the jaw bone
- Removal of excess gum tissue or bone
- Reduction in the size of the alveolar ridge
- Exposure of impacted teeth
- Soft tissue surgery and grafting
